UNDERSTANDING THE SERVICE

What is an NDIS Psychosocial Recovery Coach?

A Psychosocial Recovery Coach is a specialist support designed specifically for NDIS participants with a primary diagnosis of psychosocial disability. While a Support Coordinator focuses on “doing for” you (organising services and contracts), a Recovery Coach focuses on “doing with” you.

Our goal is to help you increase your functional capacity and independence so that, over time, you feel empowered to manage your own supports.

Funded under your NDIS Capacity Building budget, under line item 07_101_0106_6_3. This is specifically allocated for developing your skills, growing your independence, and supporting your recovery goals — separate from Core Supports funding.

Available to self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants. Learn more about NDIS funding types →

The evachange Approach

Founded by Eve Watts, evachange is built on the belief that everyone has the capacity for meaningful change when they have the right support. We don’t use a “one size fits all” checklist. Our practice is grounded in:

Psychosocial Recovery Coach

A Balanced Approach to Support

My approach is grounded in professional knowledge and shaped by real-world experience, creating support that feels authentic, empathetic, and person-centred.

Trauma-Informed Recovery Support

Providing a consistent, safe and supportive presence during periods of high distress while helping you stay connected to your recovery goals and professional supports.

Recovery-Oriented Practice

We focus on your strengths, not just your symptoms. We walk alongside you as you define what a “good life” looks like for you.

How Is a Recovery Coach Different from a Psychologist or Support Coordinator?

This is one of the most common questions people ask — and it is a good one. Understanding the difference helps you make the most of your NDIS plan and ensures you get the right support for the right goals.

Recovery Coach vs. Psychologist / Clinical Care

Recovery Coach (evachange)

Non-clinical — no diagnosis, treatment, or therapy
Focuses on building daily capacity, skills, and independence
Works alongside your clinical team, never as a replacement
Funded through NDIS Capacity Building
Sessions via telehealth from your own comfortable space

Psychologist / Clinical Care

Clinical assessment, diagnosis, and psychological treatment
Focuses on treating a mental health condition
Is part of your clinical care team
Often funded through Medicare or private health
Typically delivered in a formal clinical setting

Important: A recovery coach and your clinical team work together. If you are receiving clinical care, evachange supports those goals by focusing on the practical side of daily life and recovery. You do not need to choose one or the other.

Recovery Coach vs. Support Coordinator

Recovery Coach (evachange)

Focuses specifically on psychosocial recovery goals
Builds your skills, resilience, and community connections
Addresses how your mental health condition affects daily life
Funded under Capacity Building, line item 07_101_0106_6_3
Works with you on your recovery journey

Support Coordinator

Helps you implement and manage your NDIS plan
Coordinates the services and supports in your plan
Connects you to providers across your support network
Funded under a separate NDIS line item
Works with you on your plan and service connections

These are different roles — and some participants have both. If you are unsure which applies to your situation, or whether your plan includes funding for either, reach out and Eve can help you work through it. Learn more about NDIS plan types →

Is Psychosocial Recovery Coaching Right for You?

You do not need to have everything figured out before you reach out. If any of the following sounds familiar, recovery coaching through evachange may be right for you.

You have an NDIS plan with Capacity Building funding (self-managed or plan-managed)

You have a diagnosed mental health condition that affects your day-to-day life

You want support building routines, skills, and connections — at your own pace, without pressure to meet goals before you are ready

You have tried other services and felt unseen, rushed, or misunderstood

You want to work consistently with one person, not a rotating roster of workers

You are on a waitlist somewhere else and need support now

You want someone who genuinely listens and walks alongside you

Common Questions About Psychosocial Recovery Coaching

If you can not find the answer you are looking for, reach out directly. Eve is happy to talk you through anything before you decide whether to proceed.

  • What happens in the first session?

Before any formal sessions begin, you will have a free 15-minute introductory chat with Eve. This is a low-pressure conversation — not a clinical assessment, not a commitment. It is simply a chance to ask questions, share a little about your situation, and get a feel for whether evachange is the right fit for you. If it feels right for both of you, you will talk through next steps together at your own pace.

  • Is there a minimum commitment or contract?

There is no pressure to commit to a set number of sessions upfront. Your recovery plan is built around your goals, and the pace is always yours to set.

  • Can I access evachange if I am not in Newcastle?

Yes. evachange delivers all sessions via secure Microsoft Teams, making recovery coaching accessible to NDIS participants anywhere in Australia. While evachange is based in Newcastle and has a particular focus on the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Hunter Valley, Cessnock, Maitland, Nelson Bay, and Anna Bay region, location is no barrier to accessing support.

  • How is a Recovery Coach different from a Support Coordinator?

A Support Coordinator helps you implement and manage your NDIS plan — connecting you to services and making sure everything is in place. A Recovery Coach focuses specifically on your psychosocial recovery: building your skills, resilience, connections, and daily capacity. These are different roles funded under different line items. Some participants have both. If you are unsure which applies to your situation, reach out and Eve can help you work through it.

  • Is evachange a registered NDIS provider?

No. evachange is an unregistered NDIS provider. This means evachange works exclusively with self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants. Agency-managed participants are not able to access evachange’s services. If you are not sure how your plan is managed, your plan manager or support coordinator can tell you — or contact Eve directly and she will help you understand your options.

  • What NDIS funding can I use for recovery coaching?

Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is funded under your Capacity Building budget, line item 07_101_0106_6_3. If your plan includes Capacity Building funding, you can use it to access evachange’s services. If you are unsure whether your plan includes this category, your plan manager, support coordinator, or the NDIS can help you check. Learn more about NDIS funding →

  • Do I need a referral to access evachange?

No referral is required. You can reach out directly by phone, email, or via the contact form. Eve will have a free 15-minute introductory chat with you to understand where you are and how evachange can help. There is no obligation and no pressure to commit to anything after that conversation.
